Unlike flexible ID badge holders and ID card dispensers, rigid, molded plastic ID badge holders do not cover both surfaces of ID cards. Therefore there is no need for people to extract their ID cards in order to use chips or magnetic stripes. Rigid ID badge holders consequently lack both extractor slides and thumb notches.

Rigid ID badge holders display ID cards either vertically or horizontally, depending on which model is chosen. ID Cards can be inserted into ID badge holders either from the top (“top-load”) or side (“side-load”).

ID badge holders with “slot holes” have one opening – for lanyards - in the center of their top sides; models providing “chain holes” have two holes on their top corners. ID badge holders offering both a slot hole and chain holes have three openings.
